How Does This Work?
From Strategy Development to Objectives Achieved
Checkmate develops unique strategies that will achieve your objectives in the required timeframe and at reasonable cost

Identification of Desired Outcomes
Checkmate begins the process with free and respectful client consultation, ensuring clear understanding of the client’s objectives. During this phase, Checkmate assists clients to understand potential outcomes and costs.
Strategy Development
There are many ways to attack a problem. Checkmate collaborates with each client to develop the most appropriate approaches for achieving their desired result. No fieldwork begins until the client is satisfied with the plan.
Research and Fieldwork
Checkmate works along multiple lines of effort to produce results. Research – open sources, public records, or proprietary databases – sets conditions for fieldwork. Then, operatives move to the field for activities such as surveillance, witness interviews, vulnerability assessments, or protective duties.
Reporting and Deliverables
Checkmate knows that some clients may need near-real-time information to meet their objectives. Depending on the nature of the assignment, clients can receive rapid verbal updates or daily written summaries to augment more comprehensive written reports.
Evaluate Results and Evolve Approach
Unexpected obstacles or changing client needs sometimes present themselves over the course of an assignment. Checkmate continuously assesses the effectiveness of the initial strategy, maintains communication with the client, and recommends evolution of the strategy (if necessary) to achieve results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you offer that I can’t do myself?
There are several ways to approach this question.
One consideration is accuracy of information. There are a lot of free websites offering to find people these days. Unfortunately, much of the information is old, incomplete, or contradictory. Licensed investigators have access to proprietary databases with the most up to date information available, and the skills to weed out bad data.
Other things to consider include legal liability and the opportunity costs of amateur sleuthing.
For example, operating as an unlicensed private investigator in Washington is a gross misdemeanor punishable by fines and even imprisonment.
Similarly, unlicensed persons conducting their own surveillance could be at risk of stalking or harassment accusations which licensed investigators are generally protected from.
Then there is the damage that could be done to one’s case by inadvertently violating laws while trying to gather information…potentially rendering anything discovered inadmissible in court.
Licensed investigators know how to get the necessary information without jeopardizing the client’s interests.
What can an investigator NOT do?
Investigators are bound by both ethics and law.
Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 9.73 governs privacy rights in Washington State. It generally forbids intercepting, recording or divulging private communication without consent. Therefore, activities like wiretapping are illegal even for private investigators. Similarly, installing a tracking device on a vehicle is often forbidden.
Professional misconduct for private investigators is defined in RCW 1.165.160. Likewise, RCW 18.235.130 defines professional misconduct by holders of any professional license in Washington State.
Can you locate someone for me?
Of course. Typical locate assignments for attorneys include finding witnesses, heirs, debtors, or someone you need to serve with legal papers.
In cases without a legal action, Checkmate works a little differently out of respect for individual privacy.
Let’s say you’d like to track down an old friend. Checkmate would locate the individual, let them know that you’d like to reestablish contact, and provide them with your contact info. You would be notified that contact had been made, but the onus for getting in touch would be on your friend.
What guarantees can you offer?
Checkmate will work tirelessly and ethically in pursuit of our clients’ objectives. The results of an investigation, however, cannot be guaranteed. The facts will lead where they lead.
Will my case be confidential?
Checkmate Strategic Services is serious about the privacy of our clients. We will pursue your objectives with discretion and complete confidentiality.
Note also that divulging confidential information obtained in the course of any investigation, or accepting employment adverse to a client or former client, is unprofessional conduct under RCW 18.235.130.
